How we all met along with some memorable moments…
July 2001
Chugging along in New Brunswick league.
On July 21 we will play a friendly against Russian team
from Fair Lawn on Cook.
June 2001
Playing along in New Brunswick league. A win, a loss and
2 ties in June.
On June 11 we played a friendly against 'Sputnik' at
Sabena Park. Losing 0:2 were able to come back after goals
by Alex Prymak and Yura Goliyad. Final score 2:2.
May 2001
Started playing in New Brunswick league. The league consists
of 12 teams of mainly Spanish origin.
2 wins in first 2 games were followed by a tie and 2
losses.
Alex Rikshpun joined Tornado. We know Alex since Fall
2000 when he along with his friends from what is
now Sputnik showed up for a friendly game on Cook. Personally,
I will never forget that night since he was
the only person who ever saved my penalty shot.
Lost a friendly 0-1 to Russian team from Brooklyn. Unfortunately,
we were not able to show what we are really
capable of because of the very bad field. The only goal
came after 2 strange bounces.
April 2001
Charlie Cavalarro joined Tornado. Apparently, he saw us
playing in Johnson Park, talked to Val Bogomolny
and here he is.
April 15, 2001 we played in our second tournament and
won it. The tournament included 8 teams.
1st and 2nd games we have won on penalty kicks. The final
was won after tremendous anecdote by Alex Grinberg,
spectacular free kick by Yura Goliyad and header from
Vova Trubnikov.
January 2001
Tornado FC is born. We play in our first tournament at
Rutgers (January – March) . Despite stellar performance
during regular season (goal differential +57 in 7 games)
we lose in elimination round on penalty kicks.
Pretty painful but we learned to take penalty kicks as
next tournament showed.
October 2000 – February 2001
Played for fun indoor in Metuchen. See table below (Thanks Val R. for keeping scores)
Summer 2000
Alex Grinberg and Kostya Kosikov joined us. Apparently,
we have to thank Val Bogomolny’s wife for Alex Grinberg.
She challenged him that he can’t wake up early every
Saturday and Sunday and play soccer. Well, I don’t think
He missed a single practice since.
Spring 2000
Gene Klein and Georgy Vladimirov joined us. Fraza “Silnie dolzhny bit’ blagorodnimi” voshla v obihod.
Fall 1999
Val Bogomolny, Igor Paruchev, Alex Fridman, Eugene Korsunsky
and a few others joined another group of
Russian speaking players (mainly from Bellcore) which
included Yura Goliyad, Yevgen Ryazanov, Alex Karger,
Val Ryjouk, Sergey Kozyrenko, Vladimir Trubnikov, Alex
Primyak and others. Initially we played at Middlesex County
College but soon moved to Cook Campus of Rutgers University.
Fall 1997
Val Bogomolny, Igor Paruchev, Alex Fridman, Eugene Korsunsky,
Slava Korol, Grisha Shaeffer and Victor Markovich
won intramurals championship at Rutgers Busch Campus.
Losing 0 – 4 in the final after 4 minutes we came back
to win 6-5 with Val Bogomolny scoring 3 including game
winner with just seconds remaining.
Around ‘1993
Alex Fridman, his brother Slava, ‘borets’, Slava Korol
and Grisha Shaeffer join Val and Eugene. Now we got 3 on 3. J
Interestingly enough, Eugene Korsunsky broke ankle ‘bortsa’
in the very 1st game.
Around ‘1991
Eugene Korsunsky and Val Bogomolny play 1 on 1 in the
snow.
